Coach Eric Clancy drops that Bostonian barricade and let’s us in on some personal dirt.
How did you get started with CrossFit?
My two brothers are in the NAVY and they were doing it. They would send me their results and being competitive I would always try to beat them. I purchased my own set of rings and would bring them to the gym I was a member at and would try muscle ups and really enjoyed all the stupid glances I got. I was hooked from then on.
How did you find your way to Verve?
When I moved to Denver, Verve was in the old space in the Highlands and not accepting members. Once they moved to the new space, I attended a nutrition lecture to check out the space. I was working out by myself at a gym downtown, and noticed that I would stop workouts in the middle so I decided at that point it was time to make a change and join Verve.
What made you want to be a trainer at Verve?
I enjoy CrossFit and wanted to make it a full time position. I was nervous at first, because seeing how good all of the trainers are, I wasn’t sure I would fit in, but the trainers at Verve are very forthcoming and willing to help out in any way possible and we have a great community of athletes that makes working at Verve very fun and easy.
You are originally from the Boston area, what brought you to Denver?
To snowboard is the short answer. I had intended on staying a season and then continuing west to SF to continue working in online, but was lucky enough to land a job in Denver that was exactly what I was looking for. I fell in love with the city and decided to make it my home.
Why do you have such a huge man crush on Luke?
Dude is the man. He knows Jay-Z and helped him make beats or so he says. I believe him that’s all the matters. Luke really helped me a lot in the beginning of my tenure at Verve and now that I see most of what he taught me was lies, I respect him even more.
Would you say your man crush on Luke is greater than that of Tom Brady? Why or why not?
Don’t be ridiculous. Brady is untouched in the realm of man crush for me. Sorry Luke, but you’re still up there.
What do you and Pete do together on your days off? Yeah, I’m pretty that’s who you hang out with the most.
Pete is more of a TV dog than an outside dog. We do take walks quite often but he’s terrible at them. He stops and sniffs everything so what is supposed to be a ten minute walk takes upwards of an hour. Many times I’ve walked him downtown and had to carry him home because he basically had enough.
Does Pete get jealous when you come home and do nothing but talk about how awesome Luke is?
Pete knows whats up. He’s my sounding board. I run all my ideas by him, good or bad, or I simply vent to him.
When the Broncos make it to the Super Bowl by beating out New England will you cheer for them then?
Yes. I’m a Broncos fan, just not when they are playing the Patriots or if the outcome of the Broncos game has some effect on the standing or seeding for the Patriots.
What is your favorite CrossFit WOD?
Helen, Nasty Girls, Linda, and Nate are all up there for me. I have a love hate relationship with Fran too.
What is your greatest CrossFit accomplishment?
I guess it’s still happening. I like when I see something new done and can’t get it at first, but after practicing it, I’m able to figure it out. Muscle ups were really difficult for me when I started same with handstand walking, but after practicing and working on technique they are just another movement now.
Let’s hear it Eric, one last awesome factoid all Ververs must know about you. GO.
While studing theater in London, I almost got in a fist fight with Kevin Spacey. It’s a long story, but know this, two academy awards doesn’t give you a free pass with me. Thanks this has been a lot of fun…Luke call me if you want me to change any of the above, I’m number 2 on your speed dial.
Thanks for the info man. P.S. is n’t there a shower at your place?
