"Gaming a WOD"

Often times, "gaming" a workout is entirely appropriate in order to excel.  Not sure what I mean by "gaming" a workout?  See if this sounds familiar: the WOD is four rounds of an 800 meter run with adequate rest in between rounds.  You think to yourself "Well, if I go out on the first couple at an easier pace, I might be able to keep the splits within a few seconds of each other."  Seems like a good idea right?  This is what I mean by "gaming" a workout.  You are attempting to think your way through a workout by developing a plan of action that will maximize your average power output for the duration of the workout.

Well brainiac, sometimes throwing your plans out the window and ignoring your better judgement will make you stronger.  Sure it's scary to put it all on the line like that – I mean can you imagine how horrible an 800 meter sprint must be?!?  Well, you'll never actually know unless you give it a shot.  Stick your neck out the next time you're tempted to game a workout – you might just surprise yourself.  Then again, you might end up with your head between your legs trying wondering what just happened.
